Rort is part of our Greeting Card Project in Cambodia, where she helps prepare and assemble cards that we then sell in North America. When the young woman shared her story with us, we were shocked to learn that she lives in an area with active landmines from the days of the Khmer Rouge genocide and the Vietnam War.
Once, her family was cooking dinner around a campfire and then went off to their house to sleep. As often happens in Cambodia, fires are left unattended since the humidity allows it and when they were all in bed, they were awaken by a big explosion. They soon discovered that their fire was burning on top of a landmine. Thankfully, her family survived.
Rort also shared that her brother was killed by explosives, which he was using to fish. The process was to throw the lit explosive into the water and then pick up all the floating fish. When the young man lit the explosives, he held them for a moment too long and the explosion detonated in his hands.
As for the rest of Rort’s story, we’ll let her tell you herself—in her own words:
My name is Rort, I am 26 years old and my birthday is August 11, 1989. I had malaria once.
My parents are divorced and my father is gone. I have 5 siblings but one of my brother died at the age of 5 years old. Before I didn’t obey my parents and I always got out of helping them.
These days, I have regret in my life because there are lots of problems happening in my family. There is only my mother who takes care of my siblings.
I am so thankful to God for his great protection and that He has blessed my family.
I would like to ask you to pray for my family, that the Holy Spirit would come upon us. Please also pray for me that I won’t be shy or afraid of someone. Pray that I am strong to serve the Lord Jesus. I am really committed to serving Him but I just feel like I am so weak in spiritually.
Pray that God will strengthen me, so that I will be strong and brave to serve Him. Thank you so much for all your prayers for my family and me. May God bless us all.
