Meet Vilma S.

  • Was tricked into working at a bar.

Vilma came from a large family of 9 siblings. When she was 24 years of age, she became pregnant. The baby’s father refused to marry her and offered her no financial support.

An acquaintance promised Vilma a job in the province, and she accepted it. She left her family in Manila and traveled several hours north, only to realize she had been tricked. With no money to return home, she entered prostitution and began to work in a bar. Once she had saved up enough money to leave, she returned to Manila.

  • How she got started in this livelihood project:

Vilma entered a training program with an organization for Filipino women caught in prostitution in 2006. While with the organization, she demonstrated decisiveness, reliability, and a genuine desire to help others. In 2008, she was selected to be one of four team leaders.

“As a team leader, I will try to carry out my responsibilities, teach and help my fellow trainees. I want to become a good example to the other trainees here.”

Work of Your Hand has purchased earrings, bracelets and necklaces through Samaritana, that were made by Vilma.

  • March 2011 Update:

Work of Your Hand met Vilma and observed her as she dedicated her life to helping other girls who had been tricked. What a blessing she has become!

  • August 2012 Update:

Vilma is no longer with the organization that WYH partners with. She is now with another organization that also helps women caught in the throes of prostitution. Although we are sorry she is gone, we are glad that she is still receiving help.
