Beth B.

Sewing from home.

Beth, thirty three years old, worked as a sewer for many years, but three years ago had to resign to care for their two small children.  Her oldest is studying grade four, and her youngest is in a prep school far away from home.  Although her husband works as a construction worker, he only receives 385 pesos/day.

Once Beth could no longer work, the family struggled financially and so she started looking for sewing jobs that she could do from home.  However, she had very few customers.

How she got started in this livelihood project:

In the summer of 2009, Beth began working with Christ Servant’s Community Church in the sewing livelihood project supported by Work of Your Hand. She was surprised by the amount of income she received from the work.

June 2010 Update

After working on a livelihood order from Work of Your Hand, Beth was able to set aside some funds to lay concrete on their dirt floor.  This is especially helpful because she lives in an area that is prone to flooding 6 -8 times a year.  She was also able to buy all the school materials required by her children for the start of the school year. (School starts in June in the Philippines.)

March 2011 Update

We visited Beth and she was happy to see us and show us her home renovations.  It was wonderful to see her concrete floor, but what was even better to see was that they had been able to fix their roof and ceiling.  Previously it was only 6 feet high, and in their hot climate it was sweltering inside.  Now, with high ceilings, it is much nicer and cooler inside.
