Adelaida N.

Lives in a garbage dump with fifteen relatives.

Adelaida is 52 years old and lives with her husband, five children and eight grandchildren. Two of her children are married but remain with her in their small and crowded home. Her husband has no stable income as a barangay (community) volunteer. That’s why she works hard every day to support her large family.

She used to sell vegetables and fish but after surgery on her stomach was told by doctors she could no longer carry heavy items. She tried to help her family by learning to sew, but seldom received orders.

How she got started in this livelihood project:

Several months ago, her sewing skill became a blessing for her and her family, as she was able to use it in her work with Christ Servant’s Community Church. This church operates a livelihood project that is supported by Work of Your Hand International Development. Because of this work, she was able to provide financial support for her daughter who was giving birth and whose husband had no income. Now she is one of our regular sewers and is really happy every time we place an order, as this is her family’s major source of income.

June 2010 Update

After working on a livelihood order from Work of Your Hand, Adelaida was able to save enough money to purchase a washing machine. What a blessing this has been for her, as she no longer has to hand wash clothes for fifteen people!
