Gemma D.

Suffering from a lack of food, water and electricity.

Gemma has seven children. All are in school, with two of them attending college through the help of sponsors. For several years, their source of income came from her husband’s salary as a security guard, and her work as a sewer in a small garment establishment. They were able to meet their family’s needs at this time. However, when they moved to Payatas and their children started to go to school, the struggles began. Gemma needed to stop work because nobody would take care of her children when she was away. Therefore, the only income they had was from her husband’s work, which did not cover their budget. This meant times where they had no food, no connection to electricity or water, and no school allowance for their children.

How she got started in this livelihood project:

Gemma found work through the livelihood project at Christ Servant’s Community Church. Because of the good income she receives, Gemma’s lifestyle changes every time Work of Your Hand places an order for juice pack products. She is thankful and hopeful that one day she will have work like this on a daily basis.

March 2011 Update

Gemma no longer sews because she prefers to cook and so opened a restaurant stand in her community.
